Despite the global pandemic, plenty of consumers still plan to plunk down some dollars for smart devices over the next 12 months.

Nearly a third (31%) of U.S. households are more likely to want to purchase new tech products within the next year, despite COVID-19, according to a new study by the Consumer Technology Association (CTA).

The greatest level of buying interest are portable battery chargers (39% of households), smartphones (36%), wireless earbuds (27%), TVs (24%), laptops (22%) and home video consoles (21%).

Smart home technology like smart speakers, smart lightbulbs and smart doorbells increased household penetration with 39% of households now owning at least one smart speaker, an increase of 8% from last year.

“Consumers’ continued desire for new technology is strong and the value of tech has never been stronger,” said Steve Koenig, CTA vice president of research. “As the pandemic carries on, the impact on technology spending will remain in question. However, it’s clear that tech is indispensable in our lives.”
