Big Money In The Internet Of Things: A Mid-Year Report

While the numbers and percentages involving the Internet of Things are large, they are nothing compared to the dollars involved.

Now that the first half of the year is over, I have also tabulated the stats and forecasts regarding the money involved. Here’s a look at the research around the IoT money, with the source at the end of each.

  • $348 million – Security spending on the Internet of Things this year (Gartner)
  • $547 million – Security spending on the Internet of Things in 2018 (Gartner)
  • $600 million – Revenue from in-vehicle infotainment systems within four years (Juniper Research)
  • $52 billion – Market size of smart cities last year (MarketsandMarkets)
  • $55 billion – Smartphone sales revenue this year (Consumer Technology Association)
  • $287 billion – Total retail revenue this year (Consumer Technology Association)
  • $1.2 billion – Revenue from sales of smart home products this year (Consumer Technology Association)
  • $2 billion – Amount to be spent on virtual and augmented reality headsets this year (CCS Insight)
  • $2 billion – Amount to be spent on wearable cameras this year (CCS Insight)

Even if off by several percentages, there is big money in the Internet of Things.
